​Join us for SKETCHBOOK SAFARI: an arty afternoon at Our Amazing Animal World

Here’s what to expect:

You’ll be welcomed into the sanctuary for a tour, where you can see all of our rescues residents up close. Grab your materials and we’ll get started with some relaxed mixed media sketching and drawing around the sanctuary, with guidance and prompts from Josie, our artist host and facilitator for the day. 

 

You are free to explore and welcome to draw any of our animals throughout the session. We have a list of petable animals - Mark and Jerry will be on hand to introduce you to your drawing subjects during the workshop, so you can meet them, hold them or pet them, learn more about their stories… and of course take as many pictures and videos as you like!

The types of art materials that will be available are pens, pencils, crayon, coloured pens & pencils, acrylic markers, paint sticks. If you’d like to bring something specific feel free, but note you’ll likely be standing while drawing with a board, so it needs to be portable. We’d like to avoid charcoal if possible in order to keep things safe for our animals. Drawing boards will be provided.

The types of animals you can expect to see: rabbits, guinea pigs, skinny pigs, chinchillas, mice, rats, gerbils, chinchillas, hedgehogs, tenrecs, chameleons, bearded dragons, skinks, monitor lizards, iguanas, parrots, turkeys, pigeons, frogs and more

 

IMPORTANT INFO:

 

• As this is an environment with live exotic animals, it can get noisy (they’re just chatty and will be excited to meet you!). As such, if you have sensory sensitivity, we recommend bringing ear defenders or earplugs. 

 

• We recommend wearing comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting a little messy.

 

• We’ll be taking photos and content on site, just let us know at the event if you’d prefer not to be included for any reason.

 

ALLERGY INFORMATION

We have plenty of furry creatures on site (including cats, dogs, rabbits, chinchillas), and the event will be taking place inside, so please consider this a safety warning if you have any severe allergies to animal fur.

 

• We won’t be serving food as part of this event, but some of the animal food contains nuts and seeds. Though you won’t be exposed to this directly, we cannot guarantee this event is safe for you if you have an airborne allergy. Please get in touch if you have any questions and we’ll be happy to advise you as best we can!

 

• This event is aimed at adults. If you’re interested in future art workshops for children, register your interest with us.
   

NEED TO CANCEL?

If you need to cancel we will at least 48 hours notice or a refund will not be possible.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS

Our sanctuary is housed in a very old, compact building and unfortunately its limited space means it is not currently wheelchair accessible. We’re sorry for the barrier this creates for visitors. We hope to expand into a fully accessible centre in the future, where everyone can enjoy meeting our animals. Thank you for your understanding as we work within the constraints of our current building.

GETTING HERE:

We’re at  Our Amazing Animal World, Old School House, Church Rd, Scaynes Hill, Haywards Heath RH17 7NY. 

 

By car: Parking is free and unrestricted in the area.

 

By train: The nearest train station is Haywards Heath, and you can get taxis over to the venue from there which take around 10-15 minutes. You can also take the 31 bus to Scaynes Hill from Haywards Heath station, but be warned, they are sporadic, so plan ahead!

 

By carrier pigeon: from various providers, at your own risk.
